Italy is at its finest in spring that is generally April through May and through the autumn months October until the end of November. During these months, the landscape is stunning, the temperatures are pleasing and there are moderately few crowds. Try to avoid August, as this is the time that most Italians take their vacations, and many shops and businesses are closed as a result.
Italy's typical weather differs from north to south and from lowland to mountaintops. Temperatures at sea level tend to be similar around the country, with altitudes creating abrupt changes between summer and winter. Winters are lengthy and harsh in the Alps, with snow falling as early as the middle of September. Storms develop in spring and tend to last to autumn, making summer the wettest season. The northern regions encounter chilly winters, hot summers and regular rain dissemination, while conditions become milder as you head south.
